Having one friend throughout your teenage years might not be the healthiest thing, it’s true, but if I hadn’t spent that time enmeshed with Jazmine, I might not be as close to her now. Still, we visit each other regularly, and when we do, it feels like we’re still teenagers, with a little more confidence and a little less need to define ourselves in opposition to one another. The unlimited time with Jazmine that I took for granted in high school is harder to come by now, as we live in different cities and are frequently consumed by our respective jobs and relationships. Like Romy, I knew that Jazmine and I “weren’t that great” in high school, but like Michele, I treasured our time together anyway – or, if I didn’t then, I do now.

It’s not like we fought all the time, but I regret the spats that distracted us from attending to the important teenage business of getting free water from Starbucks and trying on make-up at Sephora.

I don’t think those words particularly impacted me when I first saw the movie – I was more interested in the film’s pitch-perfect ’90s outfits than the message hidden beneath – but these days, when I think of them, I want to cry recalling how much time I wasted taking out my insecurities on the one person in the world I was, and am, closest to. Such are the perils of having one best friend or, more accurately, one friend total it only takes one rift to leave you on your own. After a few rounds of this, Jazmine sensibly packed her bag and went home, and I spent that Halloween eating raw English muffins and staring forlornly at my laptop. Instead of shrugging and agreeing to order takeout and watch old episodes of 30 Rock like we did most weekends, I instigated an argument, deploying what I now recognise to be the most instantly enraging terms of conflict (“You ALWAYS X/you NEVER Y”). This shouldn’t have been a big deal, but I was already decked out in my frayed jean shorts and hastily Sharpied “SENIORS ’76” shirt. We were supposed to leave in a few hours, but suddenly Jazmine didn’t feel like going. I’d dragooned her into dressing up as the fear-inspiring, perennially hot senior girls from Dazed and Confused – Parker Posey being perhaps the most memorable for her delivery of the immortal line “Fry like bacon, you little freshman piggies!” – and made her promise we’d attend the annual Halloween parade in the Village or at least as much of it as our 11 pm curfews would allow. It was Halloween in 2011, my senior year of high school, and I was standing in my childhood bedroom, picking a massive and unnecessary fight with my best friend, Jazmine.
